She has been devoting herself to the study and practice of oriental dance for many years. She is of Italo-Brazilian origin and approached this form of art when she still lived in Brazil. Ten years ago she moved to Trieste, Italy, where she carries on her teaching activities at her own dance school. Maya is one of the most famous oriental dancers in Italy. Her most recent trips abroad include performances also in places such as Egypt, Spain, UK, Austria (Bauchtanzfestival) and Greece where she also shot her first teaching video in collaboration with Progetti International, which is one of the most popular in Italy in his genre. Maya Gaorry graduated in psychology at the São Paulo State University (Brazil). Her degree has been recognised by the University of Trieste (Italy). She has attended a number of training courses: Transpersonal Psychology, Biopsychology, and Esperto della Mediazione Culturale (ENAIP Friuli Venezia-Giulia, Italy). At present Maya devotes most of her time to studying and practising belly-dancing; she teaches regular classes, organises workshops, performs in private and public shows.. As a young girl, Maya started training as a classical ballet dancer. Since she was a young teen-ager, she joined a group and took part in theatre performances. While at university, she "met" belly-dancing, which became her greatest artistic passion in life. Maya is mainly an autodidact. However, she attends training courses and workshops. In 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2008, 2009 she took part in the International Oriental Dance Festivals (Nile Group and Ahlan wa Sahlan), Cairo (Egypt) and was attended by the world-wide most prestigious teachers. In 2005 she attended the Amani oriental dance festival in Lebanon and in 2006 she became one of the international teachers. Maya
lives in Trieste (Italy) where she
experienced working with belly dance in the field of mental health at
the ‘Centro Donna di Salute Mentale’ (1999). For
years she has taught at the Fitness Festival in Italy. She has worked
with the Dance University of Friuli Venezia-Giulia in Spilimbergo. In
2003 she obtained the oriental dances award at the 21st
International Palmanova Trophy. Maya Gaorry make her own web page, which is regularly updated, providing useful information on belly-dancing in general and on her own work in particular. She considers belly-dancing not only in its artistic aspects, but also as a physical training, as well as a means for every woman to rediscover one's feminine and sensual self, thus enhancing emotional and psychological balance.
